Girls' Stretch & Strengthen
Strength and Stretch Mindfulness Group is a therapeutic group for high school girls that combines yoga-based body movements with group therapy. While talk therapy is vital to understanding and addressing patterns of behavior, gaining mastery of our bodies and owning our physical experiences will provide a safe foundation from which to explore our inner workings.
Neuroscience has helped us understand that you can’t reason yourself out of being in love, or being angry, or hating particular people because these are not rational processes (van Der Kolk, 2014). Body awareness puts us in touch with our inner worlds, allowing us to recalibrate automatic, habitual reactions.
The Strength and Stretch Mindfulness Group is an opportunity to address themes particular to the developmental concerns of the participants. These include relationships with peers and family, school pressures, sexual development, and concerns about drugs and alcohol. The group aims to foster tools to help girls increase their ability to tolerate and discuss a range of sensations and emotions, instead of avoiding or acting out feelings.
What to Expect
6 weekly, 90 minute sessions, limit 6 pax/group
40 minutes of yoga-based strength and stretch, including postures, breath work, meditation & affirmations.
50 minutes of group-based talk therapy around consciously selected, developmentally appropriate topics.
This group has a Mind-Body focus, with attention towards developing coping skills. Mindfulness-based exercises such as guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation and other activities to focus awareness will be incorporated.
What are your fees per session?
Fees will depend on the numbers of participants per group. You will be provided with an overview of costs before confirming your participation in a group session.
What is your cancellation policy?
I work by offering each client a standing appointment time for which you pay on a per session basis. 24-hour notice is required in order to avoid being billed the full amount for the missed appointment. Every effort is made to reschedule any missed appointment as soon as possible.
What happens if I don't like my group?
By taking ample time to get to know the participants before placing them in a group together I try to address this before even starting the process. If for any reason you are not comfortable within the group we can either transfer you to a different group, change to individual counselling or refund your outstanding balance.
Do you take insurance?
While I do not currently accept insurance, I reserve a small number of sliding scale fees which are approved on a case by case basis.
Additionally, I can provide you with a statement to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please check with your insurance company to determine the rate at which you are eligible to be reimbursed.
How do you handle privacy and confidentiality?
All aspects of your treatment are confidential within the practice. Important exceptions include if there is risk that you might do harm to yourself or someone else. We are mandated reporters for child abuse.
