Practices to preserve a sense of personal safety.

There are are three important ways to think about personal about safety:

1) safety in your body
2) safety in your emotions and thoughts
3) safety in your environment and relationships

When we experience adversity through trauma, our nervous systems can become drastically and sometimes chronically disrupted, compromising all aspects of personal safety. Our senses and fear responses are heightened so experiences and reactions become intensified. We can become hyper vigilant, perpetually stuck on “on” or “off,” and lose sight of crucial coping strategies. Adverse experiences shrink our window of tolerance meaning we have less capacity to ebb and flow and a greater tendency to become overwhelmed more quickly.

When we become hyperaroused, our bodies can become “stuck on on” and we often experience:

* excessive activation, often in the form of anxiety, panic, fear, hypervigilence, emotional flooding

This can impact our:

* ability to relax, often making it difficult to sleep, eat and digest food, and optimally manage our emotions. It can also result in adverse relational outcomes as well as negatively impact short and long-term physical and mental health.

Hypoarousal may occur when we have too much hyperarousal, surpassing the pain/emotional overwhelm our brain/body is able to tolerate, causing us to plunge into a state of hypoarousal (shutting down or dissociating). In this state, our systems can become “stuck on off” and lead to:

* exhaustion, depression, flat affect, numbness, disconnection, dissociation

The practice of expanding your window of tolerance is critical to a sense of personal safety. When we are not in a state of distress, emotions can pass through the window of tolerance like a wave in the ocean — they will build to a crest, but ultimately diminish back into the sea. But a threat response can function like a dam. When we enter hyperarousal or hypoarousal — the extremes outside the window of tolerance — the emotional wave builds up behind this wall of fear trying to suppress it, and the pressure can become overwhelming.

It’s JUST an Instagram post but most of the time, I get so defeated by wording or like…comma placement?…that I just scrap the whole thing outright. In a broader context, I can’t tell you how many life opportunities I have had to say “goodbye” to just because one little, teensy, tiny element feels off. More importantly, by wielding the shield of perfectionism in the face of inner and outer disapproval, I have deprived myself of the problem-solving and deep personal growth that only mistakes can offer. Psssst…it also keeps us locked into escalating states of fear rather than allowing us to see that we can fall, get up stronger and reach for unimagined heights.

Whilst the goal of the perfectionist is a sort of unimpeachable greatness, this endless report card of accomplishments utterly undermines creativity. Creativity takes imagination, imagination that cannot exist without missteps, vulnerability and a whole lot of courage.

As a child of immigrants, I understand that starting therapy can be difficult and confusing. Having to reconcile the contrasting values, opinions, and expectations that come with living with multiple cultures can be painful. It can be tough to know where to start, especially when you have been told to be “strong” or to push through any hardships on your own. My own experience in therapy led to the realization that identifying and expressing emotions with others is not something innate, especially when it is not emphasized or modeled at home. As an Asian-American therapist, I strive to provide a compassionate space for those who may be struggling to identify their emotions and make sense of their therapeutic journey. In working together, I will provide a space where you can slow down, get in touch with your feelings, and pinpoint the goals you would like to achieve. ⠀

Deciding to go to therapy or finding a new therapist, and the process of searching for a good fit can feel so new and overwhelming. I've been there and I'm glad you've taken the first step.

I’m profoundly passionate about collective healing and the uprooting of oppression through awareness, healing, and growth. I honor each of our unique journeys and am curious about getting to know yours deeply. I value supporting folks in moving towards greater authenticity and liberation.

Together, we’ll work in ways that are in-depth and practical, move through challenges, and tap into the strengths that are already within you. It’s important to me that I offer an environment that is free of judgment and oppression, and in which you are fully seen, accepted, and affirmed.

As a therapist, I’m informed by my lived experience as a colony-born Chinese American immigrant, a womxn of color, my childhood experience of having an absent dad who eventually disappeared, and my own healing journey through all of these as a therapy client and through art and dance.

Before landing here as a therapist, I weaved my way through many types of work and work settings—finance, graphic design, non-profit, and tech/corporate etc.. And it was through therapy that I was finally able to access more deeply what would bring me joy.

I celebrate the strengths and center the needs of those who are marginalized by systems of power and privilege, especially BIPOC, immigrants, and descendants of immigrants. In addition to English, I speak conversational Cantonese.

My own journey as Asian-American female who is first-generation and fifth-generation has given me strong insight into what it means to straddle cultures, identities, and inconsistencies. I have a passion for working with individuals who have experienced the feeling of “not belonging” in a society that values binary labels. In order to recognize and honor the diverse identities of my clients, my practice is trauma-informed and rooted in anti-oppression and decolonization.

When I was 11, I challenged my friend to a race. As I ran, tipping my body forward, I remember the weight of my book bag dragging me back; the more I pushed, the more it I was forced backwards. Eventually, I ended up in the ER with a broken arm 🥴 I often think of this when I find myself running headlong towards the promise of escape. Escape from a feeling, a situation, a person, myself…anything and anyone who might promise a relief from my reality. Every single time, the weight of that which I refused to process pulled me straight back to the very pain I thought I’d left behind.

In this time of transition, anxiety and fear can dominate our emotions. Whether it is venturing into a new world or worrying about the safety that world holds, we often get caught up in a paralyzing cycle of anxiety. In this place, we tend to overestimate the risks of a situation and underestimate the personal resources we possess to address that situation. What are the actual, factual perils of a feared circumstance and what intrinsic skills, strengths and support systems can you call on to meet it?

Whether it is venturing into a new world or worrying about the safety that world holds, we often get caught up in a paralyzing cycle of anxiety. In this place, we tend to overestimate the risks of a situation and underestimate the personal resources we possess to address that situation. In my own backyard, since the landing of COVID in the USA, racist violence against Asian people have been up at least 19 fold. Not that you would know it based on the (lack of) media coverage; classic #erasure of a #minority group’s lived experience. Elders shoved (and dying) in the streets, faces being slashed...and the infinite number of #microaggresions that can never and will never be enumerated despite the devastation it bring to our psyches and doorsteps. ⠀

#Asian Americans (as a general group - we are NOT a #monolith), have been manipulated to occupy a space of voicelessness, docility and appeasement; we are not here for that anymore. The “benefits” of being the Model Minority pale in comparison to the costs. Oh the costs. The dehumanizing belief that Asians aren’t leaders, aren’t capable of emotional breadth; the devastation wrought from endorsing divide and conquer strategies such as the Model Minority Stereotype and “compliant obedience,” which only serve to marginalize millions of #AMERICANS. The New Year in China constitutes the largest annual human migration in the world and, for most, the one time of year they are able to come home and hug and love on their families after working tirelessly for others in bigger cities. ⠀

I am so grateful that I get to see my family whenever I want, witness their growth, know that they’re okay - oh how lucky I am to know they’re okay! But my heart is heavy for all of those who don’t and won’t know that type of peace. ⠀

The armed insurrection and siege on the US Capitol has ripped out the hearts of so many and as my mind skips on a loop through the horror of it all, it continually lands on the fear and anguish that has been triggered in those who have fled political persecution, civil wars and fascism for the warm shelter of America’s “open arms.” It is another depth of pain to flee everything and everyone you know, with only hope in your heart, pouring all you have into the “American Dream,” only to be repeatedly battered with the knowledge that you are not wanted here; that your fellow citizens would rather wage a coup than to let go of the White supremacy that has been predicated on your dehumanization. ⠀

My mind goes to intergenerational traumas and the legacy of pain born to so many Americans; the awareness that has been embedded into blood and bones; the awareness that you will always be a perpetual foreigner in the only country you have ever belonged to, the only home you have ever known. This type of warfare chips to the core of your soul. ⠀

On a personal level, when I think of my own family’s immigration story, which played out against the backdrop of Chinese Civil War, my thoughts are punctuated by the Chinese Exclusion Act, Geary Act, the Chinese Immigration Act etc., state sanctioned exclusions to keep people like my family out. Yet we still came, still hopeful, still believing that America could be better, be what we saw in our hearts. Now we know, it was never what we saw in our hearts, but I still believe in that dream. Have you ever tried to force life? Using brute strength to propel yourself into the growth you think you need, into the person you think you need to be? Oh how luxurious might it be to force timing! The truth is that forcing anything will likely be met with resistance; roots may rot, leaves may wilt, blooms may fade and growth may seize. This is not to say that we don’t challenge ourselves and others or that we move into complacency, rather, we let go of narrow expectations and begin to separate growth from the outcome.

We meet ourselves where we are and (often) we do less.

When we are intentional with our lives, leaning into ourselves, nurturing our strengths, scaffolding what needs to be healed and stumbling when we need to stumble, growth will happen. We cannot control anything or anyone but if we nurture spaces that energize us, that care for us, that demand that we shine, growth will become a byproduct of that abundant soil.

(c) I have never seen white people do this right (d) this is good training and all folk claiming to be an #ally shld have to go through this kind of rigorous training to be prepared to use their privilege in this way.

In this moment, I find it hard for my thoughts to keep up with my emotions, slippery, so so hard to hold onto; however, through it all, this one truth remains clear. Although the pain is collective, we will all have to take a personal look inwards in order to locate ourselves amongst the systems and narratives that we have been force fed. The Window of Tolerance is the optimal zone of arousal where we are able to manage and thrive in every day life. This can be thought of as sailing within a river of well-being (Siegel & Bryson, 2012) where we are able to respond to all that comes our way without getting thrown off course. When we are outside of our window of tolerance, our nervous system responds by going into survival mode – fight, flight or freeze. We can either feel overwhelmed and go into hyper-arousal or we can shut down and go into hypo-arousal. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀
Our window of tolerance can be narrow or wide and is different for all people and at different times in our lives. Emotional regulation depends on our ability to be mindful of fluctuations in our level of arousal and to respond wisely. By becoming aware of body sensations, thoughts and emotions, we can learn to recognize when we are in our optimal zone of arousal or going into hyper or hypo-arousal. When we are able to regulate and widen our window of tolerance, we can enjoy more smooth sailing regardless of the waves, obstacles and adventures we encounter.

#Forgiveness is so often the #goal after relationship agreements are breached. Certainly, it can be an admirable aim but it also sets up a peculiar power dynamic. One has it and the other seeks it; it can be bestowed and, just as quickly, taken away; it can lead to feelings of guilt or shame for the “forgiver” if they are unwilling or unable to forgive someone who has harmed them. ⠀ ⠀
What if we shifted the lens from forgiveness to empathy? #Empathy acknowledges that the personal journey towards healing is ours alone to determine. It validates and prioritizes the central hurt we feel whilst also allowing us to identify with and find #compassion for those who have hurt us. It reminds us to always check in with ourselves first and enables us to maintain boundaries, reconnecting or parting ways as needed. Empathy meets us where we are, inviting us to move or stay based only on our own inner wisdom. ⠀ ⠀
Forgiveness may be a byproduct of this journey but it is certainly not the journey alone.

When we seek to force change, clenching our teeth and bearing down so as to achieve that promotion, that relationship, that version of ourselves we just know we could be, a funny thing happens; we can end up at the top of that mountain, utterly unprepared to receive all that we have worked for. To do less is to be open to change in its most organic, authentic and intentional form. Letting go allows a release from clinging fears, expectations, emotions, grudges and disappointments so that when the clouds break and we summit that peak, we will be wholly able to embrace all that has come to us.

When we are in the throws of relationships with emotionally immature partners/caretakers etc., we are often forced to stop nurturing our inner selves and surrender all of that self to the other. Drawing boundaries and asserting our limits not only frees up energy to care for ourselves, but also allows us to interact with situations and people without negating our own needs and dignity.
